MCINTOSHFORMS™: A Grammatical Method
Addressing SSORE: syntax and semantics, orthography and readability elements of writing
Introduction to MCINTOSHFORMS™
Englicious: "A useful distinction in grammar is that of form and function. Grammatical form is concerned with the description of linguistic units in terms of what they are, and grammatical function is concerned with the description of what these linguistic units do."
And according to Bas Aarts, Grammar enthusiast and Professor of English Linguistics at UCL and Author of the Oxford Modern English Grammar and the Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar, "‘Form’ and ‘function’ are two extremely important concepts that you need to know about to fully understand how grammar works."
These elements can be especially apparent in literary prose, where together the vocabulary, the grammatical structures, and the diction form a kind of storytelling-communication. With MCINTOSHFORMS™, you can isolate these structures in your literary manuscript after the writing process to analyze/review them.
What MCINTOSHFORMS™ are
MCINTOSHFORMS™ use grammatical forms (letters, words, phrases and orthography) and/or regular expressions (regexes) to isolate morphological structures, syntactic structures and orthographic structures within a Microsoft (MS) Word document. These structures will enable you to examine/review grammatical constituents, grammatical forms and grammatical functions. This routine has been developed into a formalized grammatical method, which is used by McIntoshLinguistics, and called MCINTOSHFORMS™.
How MCINTOSHFORMS™ Work
The regexes have been formulated for use via the advanced (Wildcards) search field in MS Word. A regex is entered into the advanced search dialog, the Find tool, to isolate a morphological structure, a syntactic structure, or an orthographic structure. You can then analyze/review a grammatical form, a grammatical function or a grammatical constituent to identify and/or remove any errors or ambiguities. The use of MCINTOSHFORMS™ helps you elevate your literary writing through greater awareness of grammatical functions and syntactic functions.
The concept of MCINTOSHFORMS™
In literary prose, together the vocabulary, the grammatical structures, and the diction form a kind of storytelling-communication that can be achieve through SSORE.
I believe that understanding, and being knowledgeable about, grammar and the linguistic aspect of English maximize a writer's ability to influence diction.
"… words form phrases, grammatical functions emerge from morphological and phrasal structure, and patterns of phrases evoke a complex meaning."
